Prominent among them is the area of contiguous ruins displayed around the Aquincum Museum. The first traces of habitation date to the second half of the 1 st century AD. During the first heyday of the town, the central main streets were lined with public buildings while dwelling buildings were built farther away from the center. Following the devastations of the Markomann wars in the last third of the 2nd century AD, a new time of of urban florescence followed. The ever increasing population of the town constructed larger and more lavish public buildings. This frontier town was once again subject to Barbarian attacks in the second half of the 3rd century AD followed by another upswing in its fortunes in the first decades of the 4th century
