The two-storey tabernacle facade of the monumental fountain installation was erected as the magnificent terminus of an Ephesian water conduit, by the Asiarch Tib. Claudius Aristion before 114 AD. It was dedicated to emperor Trajan.

Theatre of Ephesus

This giant structure was an important station on the route of the Artemis procession. The construction of the theater began in Hellenistic times. In Roman times, during the reign of Emperor Claudius (41-54 AD), the theater was enlarged. It seated some 25.000 spectators. According to the Bible, the silversmith Demetrius opposed St. Paul in the theatre.

A building inscription identifies the small temple-like monument on Curetes Street, which was incorporated in the Varius Bath complex, as being ˝in homage to Emperor Hadrian˝.

Reconstruction of the Agora

The Agora is 160 m long and 58 m wide, with stoas on three sides and an Isis temple in the center, dating from the 1st century A.D. This public place played an important role as a meeting place for the governmental discussions.

Viewed from the bird’s eye perspective you can see the harbour, Harbour Gymnasium, Theater, both Agoras, Olympieion, Stadium, etc. It is estimated that the city had 33,600 to 56,000 inhabitants.

Virtual reconstruction of the Memmius monument

It was constructed during the reign of Augustus in the 1st century A.D by Memmius, the grand son of dictator Sulla. One can see the figures of his father and grandfather on the blocks today. The structure has four facades, in the 4th century A.D, a square fountain was built on the northwest facade.
